I am a photographer splitting my time between Washington, DC and Oxford, UK and shooting wherever I happen to be. I spent a decade and a half running my own creative strategy agency (Kwake Studios) and use this experience to inform how I approach my work.
I shoot exclusively on Sony cameras and lenses. Currently, my camera of choice is the brilliant Sony a7Rii and my daily lenses are the Sony FE 24–70mm f/2.8 GM (SEL2470GM) and Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM (SEL85F14GM) in Sony's G Master series. I shoot primarily with natural light (though often of artificial light).
In whatever remaining free time I have, I read a lot of books (140+ in 2017), do woodworking, build analog electronic instruments, and try to get into the backwoods of national parks whenever my family and I are able. I have exhibited a variety of media, most recently interactive, electronic musical installations (winning best in show at DC Web Fest) and woodworking.
I studied philosophy as an undergrad at New College of Florida and the Honors College of the University of South Florida. I finished my first graduate degree at Georgetown University in communication, culture, & technology with a focus on innovation theory and semiotics. I was a post-baccalaureate student at both Georgetown (pre-med) and the University of Maryland, College Park (philosophy and physiology & neurobiology) and a graduate special student (health policy and management) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Recently, I woke up to discover that I had become an Executive MBA student at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School and Lady Margaret Hall. Unless and until they realize their mistake, I'll be flying back and forth between the US and Europe learning from some of the smartest students and teachers in the world.
Finally, if you are looking for me outside of business hours (whatever those happen to be), I spend considerable time in very cold places, as my 14- and 8-year-old daughters seem to derive unnatural pleasure from pushing themselves around ice with blades strapped to their feet as members of the nationally ranked DC Edge synchronized ice skating team. I have an amazing partner who supports me despite the many crazy projects that pop into my head, all the while doing her own, much more amazing things. As a foursome, when not otherwise braving the cold, we tend to find ourselves outside, camping, hiking trails, or riding rivers. Our ever-faithful dogs, Tone, Eliot, and Ducky, are also in the mix.
